How to Prevent My Animal Being Overweight?

1. Can you feel your animal’s ribs?

  • If the answer is no, that means that he/she is on the heavier side of the scale.

2. How often should I feed?

  • Does your pet has free access to food during the whole day or eating portions during a particular time of the day?
  • It is better for your pet to eat 2-3 times per day. Their proper amount of food for the day can be spread in equal amounts (portions) during the day.
  • You would agree that the same with us (people) it is healthier to have smaller meals during the day and not one big meal once a day.

3. How much are you giving and are you using special measuring cups to give the food?

  • Every animal dependable on its Body Condition Score and Ideal Body Weight needs to get a proper amount of food.

4. Make sure you use a measuring cup when you give your companion food and not just a regular cup or container.

5. How many calories does my animal need?

  • To determine how many calories dogs or cats should consume daily for weight loss, your veterinarian must first determine the pet’s ideal or target weight. Then use that number into the formulas below.

The Formula for Weight Loss in Dogs:

1. Ideal weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = weight in kilograms
2. 30 (body weight in kilograms) + 70 = RER in kcal/day and calories to feed

The Formula for Weight Loss in Cats:

1. Ideal weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = weight in kilograms
2. 30 (ideal or target body weight in kilograms) + 70 = RER in kcal/day
3. RER in kcal/day × 0.8 = calories to feed

6. Daily Exercise for Dogs

1. Let your dog go up and down the stairs.
2. Create obstacle courses (it is soo much fun).
3. Make your dog work for its treats.
4. Play and fetch.
5. Do socialize your dog with other dogs in the park.

7. Daily Exercise for Cats

2. Placing their food and water on elevated surfaces means your cat is going to burn more calories with every jump.
4. Cat trees – they provide good vertical spaces to burn further calories.
